What the Supreme Court Does: The Supreme Court is the highest court in the federal judiciary. Its primary role is to interpret the Constitution, review laws passed by Congress and actions taken by the executive branch to ensure they are constitutional (judicial review), and resolve disputes between states. It hears cases that have been appealed from lower federal courts or state supreme courts.
How Many Judges: The Supreme Court consists of nine justices: one Chief Justice and eight Associate Justices.
How Long Judges Work: Supreme Court justices are appointed for life. They hold their positions during "good behavior," meaning they can serve until they die, resign, or are impeached and removed from office.
