Good morning. I’m Dr. Denise Herzing, and for over 25 years, I've dedicated my life to the study of the Atlantic spotted dolphin.

I've become truly familiar with the dolphins off the coast of Florida; I know all their names and their family histories. I even mimic their behaviour by swimming upside down to say hello! I've had thousands of encounters and found that dolphins have the second most evolved brain on Earth. They live in a complex society, raise their young, and resolve conflicts.

However, the big challenge is communication. Their clicks and whistles are profoundly different from human speech. My life's work is to try and decode this language.

That's where our latest experiment, the CHAT project, comes in. CHAT is an underwater computer designed to facilitate two-way contact. In just over eight weeks, we taught four simple words, like "seaweed," to 27 dolphins. The device is now ready to record and interpret the dolphins' high-frequency signals.

If CHAT works, the impact will be huge. It could be key to making contact with other species in the universe. More immediately, it will help us understand and protect these amazing creatures here on Earth. Thank you.
