The Russian Puppet Theatre A puppet is a doll in the shape of a man or an animal. A person (or a puppeteer) controls it with long strings. It can be a marionette or a glove puppet. There are a lot of different kinds of puppets. People make them from different materials such as wood, plastic, glass, or cloth. Sometimes a puppet can open and close its eyes and the mouth. A puppet speaks with the voice of the person who controls it. The history of the puppet theatre started long time ago. First, in Italy. Later, in China. The Mongols brought this art to Russia. The puppet theatre arrived in Moscow in the 16h century. In the 18t century, Petrushka became the most popular figure for Russian puppet shows. The first Russian Puppet Theatre opened after the October Revolution. It was a very unusual theatre because it travelled from one place to another and organised interesting shows for adults and children in Russia. The Puppet Theatre of S. Obraztsov opened in Moscow in 1938. Sergei Obraztsov himself showed classical folk tales with his handmade puppets! He had an interesting collection of exotic puppets. You can still see them in his theatre in Moscow. There are glove and finger puppets from Asia, shoe-headed puppets from Holland, and unique paper-shadow puppets in his museum too.
