During the second half of the 18th century, administrative reforms by Catherine II affected the region. The Orenburg Governorate was reorganized into the Ufa Viceroyalty with Ufa as its administrative center. Later, under Paul I, in 1796, the Orenburg Governorate was re-established with Orenburg as its center.
